My creative space - Need some help with a pattern

I am on the brink of making something for Mr3 from the Ottober design mag. So as I have not as yet received any helpful advice regarding my question and confirming what my logic tells me I'm putting it out there to you creative peeps who play along with Kirsty.

Despite what seems to be apparent complexity in transferring the pattern ( now that I have finally identified the pieces) ... I'm sure this is just s first timers issue, I think I can do it. I actually have a sizing question, I have already been advised to cut one size bigger to account for the seam allowances, that aside my question is ... if I am planning to make shorts and I have measured Mr3 whose chest, waist and hips correspond to one size and height corresponds to 2 sizes larger, do I make the shorts in accordance with the smaller size and add extra length in accordance with the larger size?
Does this logic make sense?
Anyone?

Now that you have pondered and hopefully offered me help ...
I'm going to cheat a little and link you back to a T -shirt turns into outfit refashion I considered amazingly creative of me earlier in the week!

  1. Tammy I would do exactly that go up one size in pattern so it fits the body measurements and add lenght where needed. Some patterns have a line going across them where you add or shorten the pattern. Hope that helps

  2. Yeah, I agree. I saw your plea for help, but as I am not experienced with Ottobre I thought I would leave it to someone who was. I have used a vintage book in the same style which had those pattern sheets which look terrifying, and I would size for the waist and then add the length as required.

  7. Ok Mrs here we go. If your pattern has no seam allowances then allow...typically 1/2 and inch around the whole pattern as you see it. Often if you increase to the size up then the curve line of the crutch can be out. You never want to give the kid a wedgie!! On the pattern look a few inches up from the hem line (of the shorts leg) and their should be a line that indicates increase or decrease pattern here. This is where you add your extra length. If you went up a size the shorts would be swimming on the poor kid!! If there is no line take a look at the pattern and add extra length where the leg section looks straight...does that make sense....were both of the leg seams run parallel.. Gee I hope this helps...email me if you get into further strife. xx

  10. Hello! Not much help with the pattern, but Pam at Pippi Creates (www.pippicreates.blogspot.com) uses those patterns alot and is a font of knowledge on kids clothes - worth dropping her an email. Cheers!
